Photovoltaic (solar cell) Systems

Solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. They are made of semiconducting materials .When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy generates electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process of converting sun light to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. Solar cells are typically combined into modules that hold about 40 cells; a number of these modules are mounted in PV arrays that can measure up to several meters on a side. These flat-plate PV arrays can be mounted at a fixed angle facing south. Several connected PV arrays can provide enough power for a household; for large electric utility or industrial applications, hundreds of arrays can be interconnected to form a single, large PV system.

Solar Electricty

Many power plants today use fossil fuels as a heat source to boil water. The steam from the boiling water rotates a large turbine, which activates a generator that produces electricity. However, a new generation of power plants, with concentrating solar power systems, uses the sun as a heat source. There are three main types of concentrating solar power systems: parabolic-trough, dish/engine, and power tower. Parabolic-trough systems concentrate the sun's energy through long rectangular, curved (U-shaped) mirrors. The mirrors are tilted toward the sun, focusing sunlight on a pipe that runs down the center of the trough. This heats the oil flowing through the pipe. The hot oil then is used to boil water in a conventional steam generator to produce electricity.

Solar Home Lighting Systems

Home lighting System is powered by solar energy using solar cells that convert solar energy directly to electricity. The electricity is stored in batteries and used for the purpose of lighting whenever required. These systems are useful in non-electrified rural areas and as a reliable emergency lighting system for important domestic, commercial and industrial applications. The SPV systems have found important application in the dairy industry for lighting milk collection/chilling centers mostly located in rural areas. It has also found use in emergency lighting systems for commercial buildings and malls.

SOLAR POWER PLANT

Solar power plant consists of SPV modules in arrays (total wattage being 1 kW or more), re-chargeable battery, power conditioning unit (inverter & charge controller) etc. When sunlight falls on the solar panels, DC current is produced, which is stored in a battery. The inverter converts the DC current from the battery into AC current, is used for operating various loads, such as, lights, fans or other electrical appliances in the building,(as shown in the sketch ),subject to the total load (watts) being restricted to the capacity of the module (Wp).

Advantages:

1.) Emergency power supply can be availed at any time for 4 hours or more per day subject to increase in module capacity.
2.) Very low maintenance cost.
3.) For areas facing power interruptions, SPV power plant is a boon, as it provides emergency and uninterrupted operation of loads such as      fans, lights, computers etc.
4.) No fuel is required and recurring power consumption charges are reduced/ eliminated.

Solar power plant may also be grid connected and generated power could be transferred to the grid.

Grid interactive solar power plants can also be installed for voltage support in rural areas of the grid, peak shaving in urban centers and diesel saving in islands or remote areas.
